SOMETHING ROTTEN:
I have a soft spot for musical comedy that is both, well, musical and comedy. I am convinced that director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw can stage anything and produce knockout results in the process. The cast and design team join in and everybody is on the same page. The same conspiratorial sense that made The Producers and The Book of Mormon so successful is evident here. I mean Brian d’Arcy James, John Cariani, Christian Borle, Brad Oscar, Heidi Blickenstaff, Kate Reinders, Brooks Ashmanskas, and more. What’s not to love? Fair warning: If you have listened to the OCR you are missing most of the experience; if you have seen promotional performances on morning show or elsewhere you have not seen the elements merge. Plus, if you are looking for serious, this is not that. It is escapist entertainment paying tribute to Shakespeare (sort of) and celebrating musicals (references? you bet!).
